Yea first time shooting a fashion show,
Put my SB-600 on my tripod, and shot it wireless but in manual control through Nikons-CLS on the D200. It was very very dark, pitch black except for an LCD projector hitting the models, couple small kicker lights, and at the end of the runway and some blacklights shining up at em. So not the best ambient situation.
Most of these are shot at ISO-200 1/40 sec at f/4
I shoot most shows at ISO 800 - 1600 to keep my shutter speed up above 100
were you intentionally at the side? or just where you had space?
try head on, be at the end of the runway, those pictures market to all involved with the show
I do like your angle/vision, and in a funky way, the low lighting works
I had a lot to learn from this show, so I cant write it off as a total failure. Yes, I was stuck in the corner, I had my choice left or right. If I got to do it over again, I think I would of left my flash where it was at the corner and shot from straight on, like in the images you linked to, I really wish mine had turned out that way.
Is it typical that fashion shows be so poorly lit? or are they primarily like the ones you linked to where there is at least some ambient light?
PFW06 tried to give me good lighting, but I still wasn't happy, this year, I get to meet the lighting techs, be there while they set up & meter & have more lights added until I'm happy, which would be ISO 100-400 at 1/125 at f5.6 I can only hope they get to that range
alot of our local shows are in poorly lit bars & ballrooms etc, so we suffer quite alot. I actually take one or two of my Alien Bee's and my vagabond battery pack & shoot with them if I can, if I can't I don't shoot the show, same as if they won't reserve me the prime spot at the end of the runway, , I don't shoot the show
as you shoot more, you may be come addicted to it, it is great for networking with designers & models, as your rep builds, you can suggest improvements they can do to make your job easier ... they actually will listen
Thanks NinaS: That is really encouraging. I definitely plan to shoot more fashion photography and Fashion shows. It was a really great time, and the more I am exposed to that situation I think the better I will be at coming out of my shy shell when it comes to networking with the models etc...
I never even thought about bringing my Alien Bee's to the shot. I was really surprised that they allowed me to even have my sb-600. I guess it wont hurt to ask for next time.
All in all, this has been a really good learning experince for me. Its now 4 days after the shoot and im still learning from it.
So I got a chance this morning, woke up a tad early, and tried to rescue some of these photos. Im really happy with them, especially compared to the originals.
