Hi Peire,

I would love to hear your opinion about how this lens preforms compared to the Sigma 24-70. I am basing it only on my long-term memory, (very risky these days) but I seem to member your Sigma images having a bit more color and contrast "pop". Do you agree or am I remembering your older images wrong?

Bill

Redwoods. I was handholding and needed ISO 6400 to get 1/50 second at f8.

Hi,

Sony GM 24-70/2.8 Mk2 is a better lens overall, both optically and ergonomically, though in the real life photography it is not that striking.

Sigma is visibly less sharp wide open towards corners especially at 50-70mm,has pronounced barrel distortion at wide end,has cooler and less saturated colour rendition,is heavier, bigger and sucks dust internally.Pictures taken with Sigma required more PP to look good, whereas those from Sony only a little.

I'm not saying Sigma is a bad lens - on the contrary,I liked it,it's output and can recommend it to anyone.Yet Sony just wins in my private ranking.

BTW: I apply less PP on Sony files and thus Sigma may look better, but in fact it is the other way round.

I own both. The Sigma imo has better colours out of camera. The only thing against it, 'may' be slightly to vivid on some scenario's, wich makes harder to mute. It's very similar to Sigma 35mm F1.2 rendering (wich ofc as prime with amazing micro contrast is still better). What is better on the Sony is controle of flare, but most mostly control of heavy sunlight images. The contrast remains better, giving you the idea that the colours of the Sony are better, but they only are in this situation, in a more normalized scenario, while really good the Sony colours (much better then first gen), they are more muted then the Sigma, so if you like a touch of vivid, Sigma will always provide better OOC images. In fact to give you an idea: The Sony 24-70mm GM II has worse colours then 24mm GM, but better then the 20mm F1.8G (wich is known to lack that colours coating of the GM). I would put it on par with Sony 100-400mm colours (perhaps ever so slightly worse but barely noticable).

Sharpness wise Peire is overstating the difference. You don't shoot landscapes wide open, period (even the Sony Gmaster while better will simply not have the Dof and thus 'also be soft in corners'. Now from F4 and especially F5.6 and a 100% on F8: The Sigma is sharp center to corner. However the Gmaster at all times has a slight micro contract edge over the Sigma. Conclusion for me is both suffice For A7RIV resolution, much better then First gen I Sony 24-70mm GM (wich clearly is soft at 70mm).

In fact if i have to choose an amazing thing about GM it's 24-35mm wich are blazingly sharp (making bringing a prime basically piontless). 50mm is very sharp but dof is decreasing, 70mm takes a very sharp drop in Dof (even at f8) making front to back 'in focus' images incredible hard, so far only 1 image was succesful in this job, otherwise the first meters or horizon was always soft. I feel the Sigma ever so slightly is easier to have 70mm everything in focus.

AF is the biggest advantage of the Sony, and the size and aperture ring. Image quality should NOT be a choice factor between the two, unless you hate Sigma colours (wich Peire seems to suggest, he also didnt like Sigma 14-24mm colours, wich basically are same). There is a small bonus for gmaster, the seize and AF is why you buy it.

There’s not enough difference in quality compared the Sigma for me to justify the cost. And I have thoroughly considered it. I primarily shoot weddings and the Sigma performs just fine. I will however buy the 3rd version if they make one 👍
Cue the haters.

I love mine. It's a bag of primes. I use it when the weather is such I don't want to be changing lenses. I'm not a pro but I can justify the cost (and weight) over the Sigma.

No justification ever needed to buy and use whatever you want. It may cost you some purses and shoes but that’s up for negotiation.

I did not suggest that I "hate" Sigma colours or overstate sharpness difference. Please consult carefully my above post.Colour perception is very subjective so,de gustibus......

IQ wise, the biggest optical "flaw" of the Sigma to me,absent in Sony, is under corrected barrel distortion at wider end.Same as in 35/1.2 DG DN and 90/2.8 C.Not expected in the lens of this class. But not a major issue.Just one more move of the slider in PP.

What makes GM 24-70/2.8 Mk2 better overall to me is the combination of features mentioned above, not a single difference here and there. And all that not by a large margin.

I was very happy with Sigma 24-70/2.8.Swapped it to Sony 24-70/2.8 Mk1 only for it's deeper, warmer, better saturated colours ,though Mk1 was optically slightly interior on high res sensors and bigger/heavier.Mk2 is a significant improvement and just about perfect for now.

I have a great copy of the Tamron 28-75 G2 but still can't stop thinking about this GMII, because of the 24mm and aperture ring. I miss it the all the time when I shoot with a non-GM lens.
What bothers me the most with the GMII is the copy variation (well the cost too, but it's a once time thing).
Some have tried multiple copies before getting a good one.
Ordered it once and had some sharpness issue at > ~50mm that affected the right side. The Tamron doesn't show any uniformity issue. At that price, I don't want any compromise on the quality.

Ultimately its not a bag of primes though, still 2.8, from an event photog at least. But for weight and AF speed alone I’ll probably cave before next wedding season (its a season here because the weather sucks half the year)
