Issue at this time is that Nikon is not honoring the 5-year warranty on this lens and does not have spare parts. The autofocus motor on mine died with no warning and Nikon wants more than $600 to replace the motor but does not stock this part in the states. The lens has been sitting at their California repair facility for a month and no word as to when it can be repaired. Poor post sale customer support and that includes NPS members.

That's kinda scary that you can buy a lens like the 600 f/4E and be without it cause of this problem.

I am sorry about your situation. I know the feeling because this has happened to me several times. And I know nothing about the 5-year warranty. Please explain that one. You are right: Things are changing for sure.
It is my experience from several major repairs, that they do not keep stock on many items.
Here is what I have always experienced with the NikonUsa Melville NY facility: I send the item to them. They send a repair price and I agree or disagree. Then, after I agree..... I wait, for the repair part(s) to come from Japan (I am guessing the part comes from Japan). Of course, all that time, they have my lens or camera with them.
Now, the good news: They not only replace the part (correcting the problem), but then, they go through the entire piece and make all necessary adjustments. And the piece is returned with all the details clearly explained on a piece of paper in the packaging. I trust them. They do excellent work, though expensive. You knew it was expensive when you bought the lens. And everything requires maintenance.
Hope that helps you with the pain. I really do know how you feel. But you will love that lens again.
Oh.... imo, $600 is not that bad at all to get such a super lens back in top condition.
