Hi Jude nice shots I just can't understand the pose in No 2 wonder what the Pelican is trying to do? You close ups of your daughter are so sweet, very nice indeed. i too have found the long glass very good to get lovely candids of the kids in natural poses.

The Pelican pose #2 is also I haven’t come across. I felt like it was a big yawning. Glad you enjoyed my daughter’s close-ups too.

Jude, they are all excellent. Great that you were able to use the 400 as a portrait lens!

Jude I think #2 and #3 best suit Ant And all three are neat pelican shots #5 is a serious looking low flyer, that is one dangerous looking bill on that bird!

The portraits of your little angel are adorable. I am not sure but somehow a photograph of her long ago taken by you by a divided pane glass door comes to mind on your lap, am I thinking of the right shot, her eyes stood out to me back then as they do now and her facial features are welcoming, she is beautiful Jude Yes the 400 is great portrait lens

Karl

Thanks Karl for your nice comments. You have a good memory. I have posted earlier sometime back a late evening picture of my daughter. Yep she is growing faster and that was also taken with my 400mm. Here it is again…

Jude, I have this lens and my resultant images are nowhere as fine as yours! Just magnificient detail and sharpness! I must ask if any PP sharpening was done on these? I am just amazed at the detail you have here. Well done.

Hi Dan. Yes, sharpening is necessary to bring out the details properly. You can get the same results with ‘unsharp mask’ too. But sometimes combination of both could get the best results. Main thing is you must not apply too much sharpening. In digital photography the images are soft when you properly focused and exposed even. This is due to anti-aliasing (AA) filter which is permanently mounted in front of the image sensor. The AA filter plays an important role by eliminating false color and moiré but resulting a softer image. Hence camera processor do the necessary sharpening in its preset settings. But you could get better results without allowing your camera to do any adjustment in RAW format and do it by yourself in CS2 or CS3. If you could PM me your email address I will send you a Canon pdf file explaining the necessity of sharpening. Hope this helps.
