Weeeelll for full disclosure I use M3s, M4-2, M5, M-A, M7, Md-A, 1F and a couple of CLEs for my film Leica mount cameras. The M5 brings several things to the table that none of the others do. The size - many say the bigger size is a negative (geddit?!) but actually it's a positive. It works and balances perfectly with the larger lenses such as Nokton 50 1.1, 35 1.2, ZM 35 1.4, Noctiluxes etc. These lenses feel too big on the traditional M bodies unless you add a grip or motor drive. But the M5 still works great with regular small lenses. I've never felt that the body was too big for a lens, but I have the other way round for the regular Ms.
Then we have the VF. The M5 shows more exposure information in the VF than any other M Leica - film or digital. It shows the shutter speed and how many stops you are away from correct exposure. With an M7 or digital M, it just shows shutter speed OR it shows + - . In manual mode they are not able to show as many stops away from correct exposure as the M5, I think only 1 stop?
Then we have the spot metering on the M5.
Then we have the oversized shutter speed dial that overhangs the front so you can easily turn it with one finger, while the camera is at your eye, AND you can see what the shutter speed is in the VF.
Then we have the rewind knob which is much stronger and quicker than any of the other Ms because it is i/ not angled (stronger), ii/ has a regular crank on it (quicker).
But apart from that, the other Ms are just as good.
All kidding aside I love using any of the Ms, they all are special, the M5 is just a bit more special....Show more →
Thanks Huss! I can better understand now. Personally, I don't like the look and size of the M5. If I was to ever buy a metered film M it would be the M7. BUT - I do want to try out an M5 one day if I can borrow one from someone. PS - nice collection of M's you have!
