I was contacted by Bass Player because they are doing a feature on Chris Wood in their August issue, and they needed a cover shot. Medeski, Martin & Wood happened to be coming through Iowa City for the Jazz Fest on July 4th. He came to my studio, and after I got the contracted shot, I did a few portraits without the bass. They ended up also buying a portrait shot for a full page table of contents background photo!
I can't post the ones they bought yet, but here are a few outtakes from the session:
excellent shots! did you happen to get any with his standup bass? He is one of the most innovative bass players right now. I never miss a Wood Bro's or a MMW/MSMW show!
Thanks for looking, you guys! Chuck, the first one I posted would have been my pick for the cover. The one they chose was very similar, but I had moved a reflector close in, thinking they would want flatter light for the cover, and it turns out I was right. The one they chose for the TOC was also in my faves
I would have loved to do a shot with his standup, but he got to choose the bass. I think it's cool, though, a 1963 fender that has been with him presumably for a long time. I've seen live shots of him playing that bass. Anyway, they wouldn't allow us to shoot at the hotel, so I had to pick him up, along with his tour manager, and we would not have had room for a standup.
