Re-read his original post, paying close attention to everything, but especially to the sentence he put in boldface type.

He's talking about the 1Ds, not the 1Ds2. He only mentioned the 1Ds2 as it pertains to a previous discussion on another thread, and how it got him thinking about the 1Ds instead.

Moondigger, thank you for making the clarification. You are exactly right. I am also still undecided what to replace my 5D with.

That is the most beautiful pigeon I have ever seen, and I always use to think of them as rather motly looking. Beautiful shot Mr Johnson!

Your decision will depend on your type of shooting. Check out this guy's recent review comparing these two cameras.

Eric, thank you for that link as it is helpful and worthwhile reading.

There is no definite one BETTER than the other; I agree with the OP in that it depends no your shooting:
moving subjects, low light/ high ISO, fast viewing/saving rates: 5D.
Sitting on a tripod at the side of a river, in misty rain, 1Ds.
I have shot a lot of w.w. kayaking along landscape and owned both he 5D and the 1Ds. My personal (read: PERSONAL) feelings: the 5D has better out-of-the-box image, better high ISO, faster processing.
The 1Ds has way better build (the 5D feels plastic by comparisson), better metering, can create low ISO images on par with the

It would seem that the general concensus is that the choice obviously depends upon primary usage. I am inclined to think, based upon previous experience, that I would infrequently require the weather sealing (I can always use my 1D3 if the enviornment requires weather sealing), but more frequently need higher ISO settings. I think that most would agree that the 5D would likely be a better choice, for me, under those circumstances.

Those who really love their 1Ds, such as Stanj, have made a great case for owning that camera body. For me, the important "take home lesson" is...how do I plan to use the camera? And for that, I thank all who have added their input and experience to this thread.

I`ll just kick in here.

I owned an original 1ds, I moved on and sold it, after uaing the 1dsmk2 for a while I missed the 1ds and bought another second hand one, when the 1dsmk3 came out I part financed it with the 1ds. I swore never to fire up the hard drive that contained the 1ds files again.
Someone asked me for a repeat copy print from the 1ds days and so i had to fire up the drive, serious mistake, I `ve now got hold of a low mileage 1ds once again for all the downside on the 1ds ergonomics (and there are plenty) when you get it right IMHO nothing is like it. I have had a 5D BTW and never found out what all the fuss was about but thats probably me and user error.

I`ve got to be honest and say that what ever aspect you ask me about the 1ds other cameras do it better and faster! all except that certain IQ that eludes me with mk2/mk3.
I told my wife to leave me if I threaten to trade the 1ds again.

i guess i should just get the fastest glass i can get my hands on and hurry and grab me a 1DS so i can get some sleep. i think if i were to actually purchase a 5D, i would always long for it, even with its shortcomings.

More to the point: sarcasm and disrespect will usually get you nowhere. Read my post again. I was specifically talking about those times when I shoot detail shots handheld. Perhaps my lighting was already taken down or, as is usually the case, the detail is in another part of the home .... often in an area that was not lit to begin with. So, as I said, rather than reset any lighting

in lalaland you can tell me otherwise, but not in here.

and the 1Ds classic is the best indoor camera you can use because it gives plenty of contrast. details, fine details and film-like noise in the shadows. Anfd it all shows during the pre-press conversions. But you still need to know how to use artificial lighting. Like it or not there is a limit to the game of pretending to be a professional and telling stories in here.

Yes, it's often necessary to 'supplement' the natural lighting with interiors, but at least in digital (RAW) we can be much less bothered about tuning the lighting colour like we had to in film, it's fairly easy to do composites etc to get round such issues.

Not sure what your gripe is. Do you just enjoy being insulting or what?

Not trying to take any sides on what seems to be getting started here, but I tried the WB shift that Markle suggested and am enjoying the results. I've noticed in the past that skin looked looked good, but for some reason just seemed slightly "off." I'm normally the type of guy that just guys out and takes pictures, but it's good to get some good, solid technical advice now and then to help out

Although I absolutely love my 5D, I actually have consider (for a short period of time), selling the 5D and purchasing a second hand 1Ds2. But the more and more I thought about it, the more I realized that I don't NEED the higher resolution of the 1Ds2. Most of the photo's hanging in my room are 11x18, along with custom panoramas. But the panoramas range anywhere from 3-10 images stitched together, which give me extra resolution to work with when cropping. I would really love to try out a 1Ds2 for a long weekend or whatnot. I came to the 5D from the 1D2, so I know what I would be getting from a 1-series body. But I'm definitely content with my 5D.

5D if you need high iso, 1Ds if you need the weather proofing and 45pt AF.

So everyone else already subscribed gets one and comes looking at the thread, because you don't want them ... Why not just bookmark it, save it to Evernote, or something, then?

It's going to be interesting to see the weight difference between a gripped 5DMKii and a 1-series.
