I have a very high success rate of nailing eye af at 1.2 at closer focus distance. Very impressive honestly. I did do a birthday session of two 1 year olds and i was really pleased with the eye af success rate.
Remember sigma will most likely release a firmware update improving the lens performance as they have done for the 35 1.4 and 105 1 4. Sure i may have one or two missed focus on a baby's eyes as they moved around but i always took multiple shots with fill flash and typically higher than 1/100sec shutter speed. These are not sport lenses and i am shooting on a a7riii so i wouldn't expect a9 like af performance 😁
Overall very happy with af. It will most likely improve with firmware updates. I will post examples of close focus on babies eyes later on today for you guys to see. I also did a self portrait with the wife at 1.2 on a timer and was happy with the af on full body environmental type shot focuses on face nice and sharp! 😊👍

just wondering guys, I'm on my second 35mm f1.2 (first had the af squeak and also had a very random reset), on my second copy, the squeak is gone which is great, been using it for a few weddings already. The random reset is still there, not a HUGE problem as it takes about a few seconds to come back to normal (screen goes white, it defocuses to inifinity and then the screen goes back to normal exposure). I'm running 2 A9s with latest firmware. I'm guessing it's a firmware issue with the a9 as the recent art lenses had firmware updates specifically for this a9 problem, surely a9 users have experienced this with this lens as well? Happens with both my bodies. And at not any particular moment either, it's not like i'm gunning fast frames a second. I've sent sigma an email but who knows if they actually do anything with their emails? Sweet sweet lens though. Just got to iron out these kinks.

Here is a close focusing eye af at 1.2 1/200 sec. Eyes in perfect focus (right one in focus facing camera).
Another at 1.2:
I've not had any reset issues but I am on a A7Riii. My first copy had that AF squeak issue as well and I exchanged it within few days as that was definitely not normal. Super happy with the 35 1.2.

Very interesting lens. I definitely think this is the best 35mm you can get for the system. I'm just not sure if it's worth the weight. I think the Sony 35mm F1.8 and Sigma 35mm F1.2 are the kings of this range now. I found the AF to be quick and reliable and I didn't notice any reset issues on my A7III whatsoever.
Some samples, all at F1.2, edited to taste. Some weird optical magic happens at F1.2. Notice the pumpkin in the second photo, and the way the background behind the blurred foreground gets distorted in the fourth photo.

Have not noticed any reset issues on my A9 running on the latest fw. I have not followed the discussion about af-noise, mine has an clearly af-noise when e.g. tracking in af-c.
But I’m not sure if that is what has been mentioned as a problem which has been resolved only by exchangibg the lens. Will it be completely silent on a good copy ?
Kind Rgds, Peter

Yea it's a really sweet lens though I definitely need to give it a go more at some landscape shots with smaller apertures. Hell even at 1.2 landscape shots look sweet! That first pic is really great looking

Yeah mine sounds like quiet electric rapid clatter. But it could just be the motor adjusting real fast. I'm happy with my copy, so hopefully this is a firmware fix.

Been running mine on an A9 and R3 (mostly A9 though) without any reset issues.
With regard to the other post inquiring about eye AF, my copy has worked really well with both of my bodies and isn't any more or less accurate that my other lenses.

The reset literally is like the techart adapter when it has trouble focussing, then gives up. If you've used the techart adapter with M lenses, you'll know exactly what the reset I'm talking about is. As I said, it's not a HUGE issue, just a bit of incovenience, especially if it's bridal shot walking down the aisle etc, so i go to my 16-35 GM or 24 1.4 for those.

This may be my favorite lens in terms of rendering on the a7r iv. I sent it back, though. I had no problem with the size or weight. I definitely had no issues with the 1.2 aperture, but I’ve come to realize that I feel most at home with a 50mm on my camera pretty much at all times. Most of the shots I ended up taking with the 35 1.2 I ended up cropping to, you guessed it, somewhere close to 50mm - or I would just switch to APS-C mode to get it close to 50. I’m seriously hoping that Sigma will bring the 50 1.2 to market.

I think a 50 1.2 would be pretty awesome! Yea everyone has their sort of favorite focal length where they feel most at home. I think mine is 25 and 35. Never been a 50 person but hey different tools for everyone
p.21 #15 · Sigma 35mm f/1.2 Art E Mount Lens Image Thread
I prefer 50 1.2 if they release it too. Then we would have an awesome compact MF (CV 50 APO) and awesome fast AF (Art 50 1.2). Still in terms of absolute IQ, the 40mm 1.4 seems the best, but this lens is close enough.
MFD is quite good with this lens:
Some samples with Marumi Achromat 77mm +3. I don't think vignetting is an issue (used one 82-77 step down ring), no sharpening or noise reduction, only exposure adj in most:

I can only tell you what was told to me by a certain reviewer that hasn’t yet published his review. He said he feels the lens seems to have been optimized for cameras using phase detect autofocus.

This thing is great. Its really nice and sharp wide open. Mine squeaks a bit when going from a super close focus to a few feet, but otherwise is quiet.... I like the performance so much I'm not going to return it as its really not noticeable unless you are in a quiet room and I don't do any video
