I am still debating this move. The CV 12 is half the weight and about 1.5" shorter. It also renders beautiful sunstars starting at f/7.1.
It's a stop slower though and I am wondering if the 4 asphericals and exotic glass in the new FE 12-24 will translate to much higher resolution and aberration control in comparison.

Still considering. But the new 12-24 may satisfy more, just half a kilogram and you have cover for a 12mm, 15mm, 20mm and 24mm prime lens. For the weight, space and price of that all those prime lenses require, the 12-24 seems to be a better choice. What I am wondering is the characteric of the new lens (sunstar, sharpness, distortion), maybe I will need to wait for more review to come

If it's the one with 100x100mm, then yes. I have an 82mm adapter for it myself. Note that there is a standard and a wide angle (WA) version of the 82mm adapter, so make sure you get the right one.

Probably best to wait for the reviews and tests. Canon's third try at 16-35 F2.8 has so much vignetting at 16mm F2.8 that it's better to buy their 16-35 F4.0. Cheaper and with VR too.

I sold my Canon 16-35 2.8 because of poor performance, then got the f4 - huge improvement in image quality. Kind of why the new Sony 16-35 2.8 doesn't excite me as much as the 12-24. Although the 16-35 2.8 is a very important lens for Sony and if it's as good as the Canon 16-35 f4, it'll be a killer. If I ever move totally away from Canon, then I'll probably pick one up.

Update now B&H is saying July 31st for both lenses. This mornings no it was August 31 for the 16-35.

So I should be hearing a big Yahoo here. Lol

Still a little late for me I'm driving back to Az from Ny I think on the 18th. Dang

B&H still says 8/31, perhaps it was a typo...

Even if every single one ever made was 82mm, I still think that is crazy huge. Like I said that is larger than the ole RZ lenses and I can't imagine attaching one of those to a Sony. For what I shoot I don't want or need massive lenses. They are a hindrance to me. I prefer something much smaller.

Costs are relative to need. You don't need it don't buy it.

I don''t and I wont.

It's a big lens with big IQ and speed, your going to pay for that. Btw the Sony 2.8 is only 160grams heavier than the F4 version.

I don't doubt the quality, my little experience with Sony glass has all been very favorable. But still over priced.

We certainly can disagree on the balance. Sure it's heavier but you can still balance heavy. I shot medium format and that by far is much harder to balance. Of course when you get the big guns out things get spread out with balance so makes it harder. Now need to remember it's much easier for me because I've been at this for decades so I'm Used to weight and bulk. The real problem here is the physics you just can't get fast glass small. Even Leica there 75 sumilux is big but that's RF and different designs.

You might be more happier with F4 zooms and some small primes. GM glass is expensive but it has special elements to control CA, special polishing for Onion rings and designed for the highest IQ.are they expensive , sure they are not cheap no question. Money is a funny thing, some folks really watch the output some will go for the best they can get. Neither is wrong but understanding what your buying is essential.

See here is the new 16-35. If you just understand the specs you know it's going to be big and expensive. Hey I don't like spending 2200 either but if your after the best IQ than you have no choose. The GM lenses are really really good.

Designed to achieve 50 Line pairs/mm resolving power
Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements w/ high surface precision
Constant F2.8 max aperture maintains exposure and Depth of field
Uncompromising G Master design for smooth bokeh and high resolution
11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh

I agree it's a great range.
However, I am getting the 16-35 GM and only really need the extra 12mm. That makes the little VC 12 prime still a good choice.
But then, the zoom still gives 12-16mm which is very usable. I will try this lens when available.

People talking about bad balance haven't seen career professionals use 600mm lenses all day long.
No matter what the body, it's going to be big and heavy.

I wish Sony had kept the 16-35 f4 with all the IQ goodies so it would be smaller, but I don't care as I'm not a 16-35 guy, I'm very happy (so far, I'll have to test the lens) with the 12-24 for its perfect size, weight, ergonomics and what seems to be excellent performance.

I'm very interested in the 12-24 and it will probably replace my FE16-35 if the IQ is up to scratch. I have never really been into the 16-35 range as I nearly always work with 2 bodies and having the 24-70GM which is just superb at the wide end I just don't need the overlap. Also I don't really need a f2.8 lens in this range as it is mostly used for landscape when I would be stopped down anyway.

Is there anywhere around with decent infinity flat-field samples? The DPreview test pics are utter rubbish for assessing landscape performance.

Sony Pro Support told me August as well so who knows. I really got interested in the 12-24mm because that way it will be a great addition to my Canon ef 35mm 1.4L ii and I will sell my Tamron 15-30mm 2.8. Then again, 2.8 is really my slowest lens so getting an F4 is not my preference but for what I use these wide zooms, sharpness across the frame matters more than the faster speed (cant believe I just said that lol).

Can't believe you said that too. Lol

But I totally get it.

I'm selling my Sigma 24-35 no question even though a F2 I would rather have a native lens here. My Batis 18 will have a question mark on it. I'm married to no gear as that is pretty darn obvious as I switch out on a dime all the time. lol

Hi Guy,

Although you certainly switch lenses all the time, I think it looks like you are moving to a more permanent solution at least for your PR and events work. I think with the A9 you will be happy with the GM 16-35 and I bet you return to the GM 24-70. I think the A9 will solve the problems you had and make these permanent lenses. I wouldn't be surprised if you added the GM 70-200 in time as well, but maybe you will pick primes to cover that range especially if they make a nice GM 200 f/2.8 (but I doubt they will).

For your personal stuff, I am betting you will be switching out 'til the cows come home

I think this says a lot about what Sony has done for professional shooters like you. The A9 and the GM trio of zooms are a very viable pro solution and I think many pros will be happy. You are pretty picky so if you can be happy I think almost all will be. This GM 16-35 looks like a great lens and for what it is a pretty small package.

I agree Steve the A9 is my answer to some of the obstacles I have faced with the A7rII which I really love BTW and still recommend it to all. But if you need speed in several ways than the A9 might be worth looking at. Having both cams I just can't miss a beat now. The 16-35 looks to be very very good and another answer for me. I'm settling in on my kit. Right now CV12, Batis 18, hopefully this FE 35 1.4 coming this week is really good, Sony 85 1.8 and the Sigma 135 1.8 which all these lenses are really really good copies. Not one of them has any issues. Add the 16-35 and I'm good. I wanted to buy the 70-200 2.8 and stop renting it along with the A9 but my wife and I decided not to lease with the A9 and zoom. So given the cash I'm just going to get the A9. I need the vertical grip for it so going to sell my A7rII grip since the A9 will be primary on event. Or stuff now. But I'm feeling pretty good about things.

In all truth going over to Sony several years ago was tough because it's a hard system at the start to work with. A7 , A72, A7r and when it started to become more viable was with the A7rII. So this is the next step and brilliantly Sony made a Pro cam that just fits the bill for a lot of guys out here banging out weddings, journalism, events and this type of shooting. Yea sports is a little limited but being silent is huge for these folks at some sports venues. Today they can use the Canon long glass and get by until we see that 400 2.8 come to play. I think Sony woke up a little. I think they realized they are not a consumer company when there hobbyist consumers want more Pro style cams. I've always said this hobbyists want what we Pros buy. They don't want to be limited either. Besides that the hobbyists are far better today then in the past. These are very talented shooters today. Maybe we are evolving to be better at our craft. Don't know but I know folks want the best they can buy.

Yeah, the 12 - 24 was the lens I was most hopeful to get. But the image quality on the new 16 - 35 is just too good to pass it up instead. I'll be ordering the 16 - 35 / 2.8 I suppose. My widest lens at the moment is FE 28.
