Can't believe you said that too. Lol

But I totally get it.

I'm selling my Sigma 24-35 no question even though a F2 I would rather have a native lens here. My Batis 18 will have a question mark on it. I'm married to no gear as that is pretty darn obvious as I switch out on a dime all the time. lol

Hi Guy,

Although you certainly switch lenses all the time, I think it looks like you are moving to a more permanent solution at least for your PR and events work. I think with the A9 you will be happy with the GM 16-35 and I bet you return to the GM 24-70. I think the A9 will solve the problems you had and make these permanent lenses. I wouldn't be surprised if you added the GM 70-200 in time as well, but maybe you will pick primes to cover that range especially if they make a nice GM 200 f/2.8 (but I doubt they will).

For your personal stuff, I am betting you will be switching out 'til the cows come home

I think this says a lot about what Sony has done for professional shooters like you. The A9 and the GM trio of zooms are a very viable pro solution and I think many pros will be happy. You are pretty picky so if you can be happy I think almost all will be. This GM 16-35 looks like a great lens and for what it is a pretty small package.

I agree Steve the A9 is my answer to some of the obstacles I have faced with the A7rII which I really love BTW and still recommend it to all. But if you need speed in several ways than the A9 might be worth looking at. Having both cams I just can't miss a beat now. The 16-35 looks to be very very good and another answer for me. I'm settling in on my kit. Right now CV12, Batis 18, hopefully this FE 35 1.4 coming this week is really good, Sony 85 1.8 and the Sigma 135 1.8 which all these lenses are really really good copies. Not one of them has any issues. Add the 16-35 and I'm good. I wanted to buy the 70-200 2.8 and stop renting it along with the A9 but my wife and I decided not to lease with the A9 and zoom. So given the cash I'm just going to get the A9. I need the vertical grip for it so going to sell my A7rII grip since the A9 will be primary on event. Or stuff now. But I'm feeling pretty good about things.

In all truth going over to Sony several years ago was tough because it's a hard system at the start to work with. A7 , A72, A7r and when it started to become more viable was with the A7rII. So this is the next step and brilliantly Sony made a Pro cam that just fits the bill for a lot of guys out here banging out weddings, journalism, events and this type of shooting. Yea sports is a little limited but being silent is huge for these folks at some sports venues. Today they can use the Canon long glass and get by until we see that 400 2.8 come to play. I think Sony woke up a little. I think they realized they are not a consumer company when there hobbyist consumers want more Pro style cams. I've always said this hobbyists want what we Pros buy. They don't want to be limited either. Besides that the hobbyists are far better today then in the past. These are very talented shooters today. Maybe we are evolving to be better at our craft. Don't know but I know folks want the best they can buy.

However, I am getting the 16-35 GM and only really need the extra 12mm. That makes the little VC 12 prime still a good choice.
But then, the zoom still gives 12-16mm which is very usable. I will try this lens when available.

Yeah, the 12 - 24 was the lens I was most hopeful to get. But the image quality on the new 16 - 35 is just too good to pass it up instead. I'll be ordering the 16 - 35 / 2.8 I suppose. My widest lens at the moment is FE 28.

Looking forward to your opinion on the A9. I'm very excited you decided to give it a go! I am confident the 16-35 2.8 will perform well, although right now I'm more interested in the 12-24. If the A9 AF really works as well as the current Canon 5D and 1DX2, there may be a big shift with guys like me who still depend on my 5D3's for lifestyle and action work. Truly excited for Sony with these two new lenses and the A9.

I've pre-ordered both 12-24G and 16-35GM and will compare it against my 16-35/4 and Loxia 21 and CV 12 lenses.

I'm very interested in the 12-24 and it will probably replace my FE16-35 if the IQ is up to scratch. I have never really been into the 16-35 range as I nearly always work with 2 bodies and having the 24-70GM which is just superb at the wide end I just don't need the overlap. Also I don't really need a f2.8 lens in this range as it is mostly used for landscape when I would be stopped down anyway.

First I was pretty sure to go with the 12-24 f4 but the first samples let me stay away from it. The GM is a different league IMHO. preordered the 16-35GM and will sell the heavier 24-70GM. If the new 16-35GM will be providing the same IQ like the 24-70 it will be a dream. I always missed to go wider with the 24-70. 24-70 is a useful FL, no doubt - but at the end no fish or meat especially when you shoot landscape. My current setup will be:

16-35mm f2.8 G-Master as landscape and walk around lens (With the 16-35mm f4 it worked quite well)
35mm f2.8 Sony ZEISS
55mm f1.8 Sony ZEISS
85mm f1.4 G-Master for portraits

With that combo landscape is covered perfectly and also portrait work with ultimative bokeh.

With Sony one has too many lens options from which to choose Quite a many seems to prefer the original two Zony lenses released with a7mk1 ages ago. Many would have saved lots of money if GM series was available years ago.

Whoa, that's a first!

Seriously though, Sony has come a long way in a relatively short period of time in regards to their FE system. Seems like just yesterday people were throwing fits about lens selection. Now with Sony's FE's, the Loxia's, Batis's, lenses such as the Samyang's, soon to be released Voigtländer's, etc, there are now MANY options to choose from without needing to venture out into lenses from other camera systems / adapters, etc.

GM line seems to be the very first with some logic. It is now the holy trinity. Others are bits and pieces. Batis lenses have a hole, loxias end up a bit short, voigtlanders are wide with questionable QC and Pjong-Jang lenses, well, with perfect luck there may be few good copies out there.

What hole do you think is in the Batis line? 18, 25, 85 and 135. Something in between 25-85 ?

Wow! New GM 16-35 size compared to FE 16-35 looks pretty good. Hmmm. Maybe my FE 16-35 goes up for sale

Yes, this hole between 25 and 85. 35mm and 50mm would fit in there. Just pondering the countless 35mm threads on Sony forum

From what Zeiss says, they seem to recognize 4 Zeiss badged lenses in that "hole." The Sony/Zeiss 35 f/2.8, 35 f/1.4, 50 f/1.4, and 55 f/1.8. From that perspective it isn't much of a hole. I am not sure Zeiss thinks there is anything needed in that range. Which is too bad as I would love to see a Zeiss Basis 35 f/1.8. I would also love to see a Zeiss Batis 100 f/2, but I don't think either of those lenses will every be made.

Certainly no shortage of good 35s and 50's for the Emount system! But a good question for sure, what might be the next Zeiss Batis lens ? Or, will there even be another new Zeiss Batis lens added to the Batis system?

Well, a year ago there were more holes than today and a year from now there will be even less. Given where we were with native FE mount lenses just two years ago, bitching about a hole at 35mm when there are multiple native 35mm lenses available is really getting petty.

Sure I'd love a compact 35 2.0 or even 1.8...but I get by quite nicely with the 35 2.8. I'm confident this 35 will come within a year at which time the bitching crew will find another hole.

28 is a logical hole to fill. I am guessing a Loxia will eventually fill that. A fast 135 (GM) seems likely. Need some longer (180mm plus) primes eventually too.

I think if the Batis 135 sells well, then my guess would be a Batis 200 f/2.8 will be next. I think Sony is going to make a GM 200 f/2 at some point, so a Sony Batis 200 f/2.8 APO for $2,200 would be quite nice for Zeiss and if the Batis 135 sells well, then I would think a 200 f/2.8 would as well. I think they might also make a macro someday, but I am not sure what that would be. I would think that Zeiss might make a 60 f/2.8 or a 100 f/2.8 macro, but those have pretty stiff competition from the Sony FE 50 f/2.8 and the Sony G 90 f/2.8 respectively. If I had to guess it might be a 120 f/4, which would allow them to keep it fairly small. I think that would be an interesting lens and I would likely get it.

I don't know if I saw an response from you on this Fred, are you getting an a9? I didn't think so because for your needs it seems resolution is more important than speed, but would be interested to know.
