King Fisher......finally.

Yesterday Pat and I were testing out the auto focus, etc on our new E-M1 II's. Suddenly there appears a Kingfisher above a lagoon we were looking over. We have been trying to get a photo of a Kingfisher for almost 20 years, but these elusive little speed merchants always flitted away before we got close enough for a shot.

Thanks to our PanLeica 100-400's and E-M1 II's yesterday finally broke the curse.

The first images are from Pat at 400mm and the dive ones are from me at 200 mm (got to love that C-AF with tracking). Really severe crops on these guys and the last one got kind of soft, sorry.

Congratulations, great shots!

At least on my uncalibrated screen they can use some shadow recovery, it's tough metering these dark birds though. What CAF settings did you use?

Thanks Bob,

We both used C-AF + tracking and electronic shutter low burst at 18 fps. Lens OIS was on. Lens focus limiter set to "full"

These are really severe crops since the bird was about 60 yards away and occupied way less than 10 percent of my view at 200mm (Pat was a little better at 400mm). Doing to much in the terms of shadow recovery began to destroy the images.

Good Stuff, Bob

I really like the Cheetah cub.........and it looks really good at ISO 6400. I've not gone that fare with my E-M1 II, yet, but you give me hope.

Gary, were these with the 100-400? What focus points did you use? They really look good for big crops!

Yes, both my wife and I use the same gear, E-M1 II and PL 100-400.

Single focus point.
This combo is just super, best I've shot since leaving Canon.

Just a heads-up for anyone that wants to use Pro Capture Mode. It will not work with the P/L 100-400. It only works with Olympus Micro Four Thirds lenses.

Easy for you to say ... and do! I am having a hard time just trying to get the target in sight with my 300/4 lens ... let alone use S-AF. That's partly because I have next to zero experience shooting BIF with a long lens. It takes some getting used to i.e. a lot of practice. So in my case (as a rookie BIF shooter) either 9-point or even 121-point works better than S-AF! What's your take on C-AF vs C-AF TR on the Mk II?

Took the Em 11 and the 40-150 to a hockey game. Shot a few moments side by side with the D5 and 70-200. Af was fine, only issue is the buffer fills very fast. I changed the H s to 20 frames instead of 60. At 60 you can really stop the action but fills the buffer way too fast. Love the shutter sound and found the Mechanical Low to work very well for this type of shooting. SO why use it when I have the D5? I wanted to see the long end, so basically 300 at 2.8 in

I would have liked your post, but it is the Flyers, after all....and I could not!

No bird shots as there arent many flying around in -20 in snow

I did get the dogs out to the park... MKII/40-150 2.8. Spent about 2 hrs walking around the park; covered in snow, frozen fingers but the MKII never missed a beat and I still had 60% battery.
