p.1 #1 · Boom and lightstand for AB800

So what are reasonably priced (cheap but not cheaply made) booms and lightstands are you all using with a AB800 and beauty dish or large softbox? I heard the ones from AB are not that great.

Often I will use a spare BG set for heavy light setups.
Put a super clamp on the cross bar and you are good to go.

Check out the Matthews or Avenger mini-booms at BH Photo. They're about the only brands worth considering, and fairly inexpensive.

Get a D600 or D650 along with a good cinestand or c-stand with sandbags and you'll be set.

I've used the AB boom and it's OK for very light loads. It's very light weight and easy to use. The attached counterweight is nice.

We were using it with an AB800 and a strip box 8' in the air and it had more give and sway than I felt comfortable with. Using a D600 now and it's much, much sturdier. Much heavier also and you'll have to supply your own counterweight.
