p.1 #1 · Canon auto focus

I have a Canon XTI with a Canon 17-85mm image stabilizer lens. When I shoot in the sports mode (basic zone), the auto focus works great. When I switch to Av or Tv (creative zone) the lens will not auto focus. This is the same for my 70-300mm zoom. Is there a setting I need to do?

You need to put in AI Servo. This makes the AF readjust as the subject moves.

Check Custom Function 4 (Shutter/AE lock button).

If this is set to activate autofocus via the '*' button you're camera will behave as you describe (because this custom function is only effective in the "creative" zone).

Thanks, I cleared my custom settings and that seemed to do the trick.

No problem.

By the way, a lot of people set CF4-1 to separate the AF from the shutter release. It's a personal choice but worth trying sometime ... you may prefer it.
