p.1 #1 · Keeping your gear dry

I am going to be in Zion National Park next week for a couple of days, and am planning to do the Narrows hike along the Virgin River. For those of you who have done this hike, how did you keep your photography gear dry? I have a 40D that I'll be taking with me. Are ziploc bags okay?

Should I worry that much? I've heard usually you only get knee deep in water, but I'm also wondering if it might be easy to trip on something while in the river. Thanks a bunch, as always!

Rainproofing in a backpack: get a heavy duty large trashbag to line the pack with. In case of rain, place gear/clothing inside of trashbag and fold the top down.

Waterproofing suitable for complete submersion: get a "dry bag" (used for canoeing, kayaking, etc; likely available from your local camping/hiking store). This is a rubberized bag designed to be completely waterproof when you roll down the top (like a very sturdy ziploc bag that won't pop open unexpectedly).

A dry bag is worth there weight in gold. They are expensive but well worth the money. Check out Cascade designs @ http://www.seallinegear.com/

They have a variety of models to fit most applications.

I bought a few for a month long canoe trip about 10 years ago and they are still in great condidtion despite a lot of abuse.

I have a Lewis & Clark dry bag/backpack that works pretty well for putting camera gear in.

This is what it is. You cant see the backpack harness but it is fairly comfortable and robust. It holds my 1D2 & 500mm in a tenba long lens case. The harness is also removeable.

I go on long sailing trips with my gear. It goes in aloksaks and then into a backpack with a rain cover. When I go between boats, I carry my gear in one of the dry bags shown.
