I was concentrating on Goldfinches in the Chicory field but these guys in the nearby trees were irresistible.

Well thanks! They are plentiful around the Northwest, Portland for example. I think they are called a Common Flicker

Interesting shots of one of my favorite birds. Northern flicker is the proper name. These are what are called orange shafted, east of the Rockies yellow shafted are common. I have seen both races at my feeder here in the Nortwest.

First, Tim thanks much for the correct name of this great bird.
Second, Chris the adult on the right is feeding the youngster on the left. Notice the adult has his eyes closed for protection!
